As I have previously mentioned, this year’s general election will be on Tuesday, November 8. Here is the sample ballot for Terry (with each voter allowed to vote for one in each race):

for U.S. House of Representatives: -BRIAN FLOWERS (Republican) -BENNIE G. THOMPSON (Democratic)

Non-partisan Judicial Election: for Court of Appeals, District 4 Position 1 -BRUCE W. BURTON -VIRGINIA CARLTON

for Chancery Court, Chancery District 5-4 -TIFFANY GROVE (unopposed)

for Circuit Court Circuit District 7-4 -ELEANOR FAYE PETERSON (unopposed)

for Hinds County County Court, District 3 -JOHNNIE MCDANIELS (unopposed)

There will not be a race for the Hinds County School Board in Terry.

Voting by absentee ballot is something you should consider. If you are 65 years in age (or older), if you are working on Election Day (November 8) or will be working outside Hinds County on Election Day, you are eligible to vote “early” by casting an absentee ballot at Circuit Clerk Zack Wallace’s offices in Raymond or in Jackson. The last day to cast an absentee ballot is Saturday, November 5 at noon.

The community was shocked on Thursday to learn that Rev. Deacon Rose Mary Foncree had accidentally fallen on her face and head on Wednesday evening at Belhaven University in Jackson, where she is a professor. She was taken to St. Dominick’s Memorial Hospital’s trauma center initially but was eventually taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s emergency room. Rose Mary had been preaching at the (Episcopal) Church of the Good Shepherd for around thirty years, and she has taught various Belhaven students from Terry for almost as much of that time.

As of Monday, Rose Mary is in recovery. Belhaven University is considering her recovery her first sabbatical. (In Rose Mary’s twenty-eight years of being a Belhaven professor, she has never had a sabbatical. Rose Mary has damage to two of the bones around her eye socket, which were broken. She will be having surgery later after pressure on her brain is down. Prayers are asked for Rose Mary Foncree, her congregation in Terry and her congregation in Jackson. Both of these churches will be having morning prayer services in the weeks ahead.

Later, on Thursday evening, this writer had to be taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and spent the night in the hospital’s emergency room. Upon walking into the hospital, the former chief-of-police of Terry, Juan Gray, was able to assist us. He certainly extended assistance beyond the point that other officers perform in their jobs. He was friendly and courteous in assisting others who were at the hospital on Thursday evening. I will be returning to the hospital for further treatment on Friday, October 28.

In last week’s column, the death of Mrs. Beverly Derlene Pope was mentioned. I still have not obtained an obituary to share. I do know that visitation was in Brandon on Friday, October 15 and that her funeral service was held at the Terry Mission Baptist Church on Highway 51, South on this past Saturday.

The First Baptist Church congregation had a fish fry on Sunday, October 16. All of the food was donated to the church, and the proceeds amounted to $2800! The congregation will sponsor a “Trunk-or-treat” on Saturday evening, October 29 from 4:00 - 6:00 p. m. facing Cunningham Avenue. A Communion service will be observed on the morning of October 30.

Sunday, October 23 will be the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost. The New Testament readings are 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 (personal words and final greetings) and Luke 18:9-14 (being right with God).

Here is the passage from the gospel of Saint Luke:

“Jesus told this story to some people who thought they were very good and looked down on everyone else: “A Pharisee and a tax collector both went to the Temple to pray. The Pharisee stood alone and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people who steal, cheat, or take part in adultery, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I give one-tenth of everything I get!’

“The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even look up to Heaven. But he beat on his chest because he was so sad. He said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell You, when this man went home, he was right with God, but the Pharisee was not. All who make themselves great will be made humble, but all who make themselves humble will be made great.”

The Terry High School basketball teams will participate in the Lanier Jamboree on Saturday, October 22. On the afternoon of Thursday, October 27, the school’s team will compete in a cross-country competition Clinton/MHSAA district super regional, which begins at 4:30. Later, at 5:00, the ninth-grade basketball team will play Pearl High School (Rankin County).

Have you noticed the new sign that advertises the foods that are available in Terry? It may be seen just north of the Terry exit from Interstate 55.

Short Cakes, located at 128 North Utica Street, had its grand opening and ribbon cutting at 10:00 a. m. on this past Saturday. I have not been able to go there yet, but I have heard so many good things about this new business operated by Sarah Short!
