October arrived on Sunday morning! This month’s name stems from the Latin octo, “eight,” because this was the eighth month of the early Roman calendar. When the Romans converted to a 12-month calendar, the name October stuck despite the fact that it’s now the 10th month.

As though the weather consulted the calendar, cooler weather is coming as it does for most years around the beginning of the Mississippi State Fair in Jackson. I know that there have been years during which the weather during the State Fair was colder or warmer than usual, but it does seem that the State Fair marks the beginning of the typical fall weather. The State Fair opened on Thursday at 5:00 p. m.

October will be a month with holidays and special days. Some of the month’s highlights are: October 9th - Columbus Day; October 9th - Ingenious Peoples’ Day; October 13th - Homecoming at Terry High School; October 24th - United Nations Day; October 31st - Halloween.

The birthstone for the month of October is the opal. October’s birth flowers are the cosmos and the calendula or marigold. Cosmos is a symbol of joy in life and love and peace. The calendula (aka garden, English, or pot marigold) represents winning grace, grief, or chagrin.

Happening around Terry High School will be the football game and homecoming on Friday, October 13th. The football team will be playing Pearl River High School of Carriere (Pearl River County). The school’s homecoming dance will follow.

On October 17th and 18th, the school will be conducting its ACT Bootcamp. The Military Fair will be held on October 19th. College Appreciation Day will be October 20th.

The second Sunday of October will be the nineteenth Sunday following Pentecost. Scriptures for that Sunday include Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20 (the Ten Commandments and the reaction of the people), Isaiah 5:1-7 (Song of the Vineyard), Psalm 19 (the witness of creation and scripture), Psalm 80: 1-14 (a prayer for restoration), Philippians 3:4b-14 (knowing Christ; reaching forward to God’s goal) and Matthew 21:33-46 (the parable of the vineyard owner).

The (Episcopal) Church of the Good Shepherd is planning a Mission Committee meeting on this Sunday following the service and the refreshment hour. I have learned that the church’s next rummage sale is planned for November 4.

Recently celebrated birthday of Terry residents or those with Terry connections include: October 3rd - Patricia Patterson Felts, Haley Brooke Smith, Jody Owens; October 4th - Rev. Doug Broome, Bill Reed, John Windsor; October 5th - Janlyn Watts Ray; October 6th - Burton Bates II, Kenneth Whittington; October 7th - Sari Whittington Knight, Morgan Lindsey Stringer; October 8th - Lisa Bridgers Wade, Bruce Hennington.

I close this week with a hymn with which I was unfamiliar, although some readers may know this hymn since it was written by the well-known writer of the eighteenth century, William Cowper. It is “Sometimes a Light Surprises.”

1 “Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings; it is the Lord who rises with healing in His wings; when comforts are declining, He grants the soul again a season of clear shining, to cheer it after rain.

2 “In holy contemplation, we sweetly then pursue the theme of God’s salvation, and find it ever new. Set free from present sorrow, we cheerfully can say, ‘E’en let the unknown morrow bring with it what it may.’

3 “It can bring with it nothing, but He will bear us through; who gives the lilies clothing will clothe His people, too; beneath the spreading heavens no creature but is fed; and He who feeds the ravens will give His children bread.

4 “Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit should bear, though all the field should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there, yet God the same abiding, His praise shall tune my voice; for while in Him confiding, I cannot but rejoice.”
