The second Sunday of the Advent season is on December 04, 2022. The second candle of the Advent wreath is lit on this day along with the first candle. It is the Bethlehem candle, reminding that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. It represents the hope of Christ entry into the world. Two purple candles, the first being lighted a week ago and the one lighted on this Sunday, burn at the same time, and together these two candles symbolize God’s peace and remind us about the prophets, who foretold that the Messiah would be born.
The theme of readings and teachings during the Advent season are for mankind to prepare for the Second Coming while commemorating the first coming of Christ at Christmas. On the second Sunday of Advent, the Church’s readings concern the birth of Christ being born in a manger and other prophecies. Readings for the second Sunday of Advent are Isaiah 11:1-10 (The King of Peace is coming), Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19 (a prayer for the King), Romans 15:4-13 and Matthew 3:1-12 (the work of John the Baptizer).

This week’s column closes with a hymn with words by Charles Wesley, an English leader of the Methodist movement and a prolific hymnwriter:
1. “Come, thou long-expected Jesus born to set Thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in Thee.
2. “Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth Thou art: dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.
3. “Born Thy people to deliver, born a child, and yet a king, born to reign in us forever, now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
4. “By Thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by Thine all-sufficient merit, raise us to Thy glorious throne.”
