In my looking at the calendar last week, I only got as far as Pentecost Sunday, and then, I stopped. I completely overlooked Memorial Day on the 29th. I trust that each reader had an observance fitting of this day. In addition to being a day of remembrance to the deceased men and women who served this country, it is also the unofficial beginning of the summer season.
Vacation Bible School will be held at Terry Grove Missionary Baptist Church this summer on June 5th, 6th and 7th. The church is located on Raymond Street, across from the old tennis courts.
Can you believe that Thursday was the first day of June?
Juno is the ancient Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth. And the month of June is still a popular month for weddings today! As a natural extension of marriage, Juno was also the goddess of childbirth. Another interpretation of the origins of “June” says that the name came from the Latin juvenis, “young people,” who were celebrated at this time.
Juno, in Roman religion, was the chief goddess and female counterpart of Jupiter, similar to the relationship between the Greek Hera and Zeus. Perhaps not surprisingly, given her role of protector of women and children, this powerful queen of the gods was also considered the fierce protector and special counselor of the state and a guardian angel warning those in times of danger.
June’s full Moon—typically the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer—has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon. While strawberries certainly are a reddish-pink color and are roundish in shape, the origin of the name “Strawberry Moon” has nothing to do with the Moon’s hue or appearance, despite the evocative imagery (shown in the artist rendering below). A Moon usually appears reddish when it’s close to the horizon because the light rays must pass through the densest layers of atmosphere.
The full Strawberry Moon rises on Saturday, June 3, 2023. Will it be pink? What is the true origin of the name “Strawberry Moon.” The full moon rises gently above the horizon and usually looks large and golden-hued. June’s full Moon will reach peak illumination at 10:43 p.m.
June 5th (Monday) will be World Environment Day.
More upcoming holidays in June will be Flag Day, Father’s Day, and Juneteenth.
The entire month of June falls into the Pentecost season. This Sunday, June 4th, is a special observation called Trinity Sunday, a joyous celebration where Christians come together to honor the Holy Trinity. This day is an opportunity for Christians to worship and to thank the Holy Trinity for all they have done. It is one of my favorite days of the Church, and I enjoy selecting and accompaning these hymns so much!
The scriptures for Trinity Sunday are Genesis 1:1-2:4a (the beginning of the world; the seventh day of rest; the first people), Psalm 8 (the Lord’s greatness), 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 (final greeting of Paul) and Matthew 28:16-20 (Jesus talks to His followers.). Coincidentally, Psalm 8 is my favorite of the 150 Psalms.
Having written this column for several years now, I have shared with readers many Trinity hymns (of which there are over a thousand according to Hymnary.com). Here is a hymn for children by the Irish author Cecil Frances Alexander. Her first book of poetry, Verses for Seasons, was a “Christian Year” for children. She wrote hymns based on the Apostles’ Creed, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, the Ten Commandments, and prayer, writing in simple language for children. Cecil and her sister founded a school for the deaf, and she set up the Girls’ Friendly Society in Londonderry. She wrote about four hundred hymns in her lifetime.
1. “We are little Christian children; We can run, and talk, and play; The great God of earth and heaven; Made, and keeps us every day.
2. “We are little Christian children; Christ, the Son of God Most High, With His precious blood redeemed us, Dying that we might not die.
3. “We are little Christian children; God the Holy Ghost is here, Dwelling in our hearts, to make us; Kind and holy, good and dear
4. “We are little Christian children, Saved by Him who loved us most; We believe in God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.”
Please keep Mrs. Jenny Wilson in your prayers. Also, Aubrey Grace, a great-grandson of the Grace family, has been sent on a medical mission trip to Africa and should also be kept in prayer.
Recently celebrated birthdays include these three: May 26- Edwina Pierce Shelby; June 1- Connie Broadwater Bynum; June 3- Jimmie Gates.
The Board of Alders in Terry will be conducting its monthly meeting for June on this Tuesday evening, the 6th at 7:00 p. m. The special-called meeting on last Thursday was cancelled.
