We Terry Yellowjackets have many memories of events, faces and names from the past that we lovingly remember. Many of us remember the Taylor family and the big house on Raymond Street across the street from the Baptist church. I learned on Saturday evening of the one of the Taylor grandsons who was very active in that church and at Terry High School, Burney Taylor (the son of Paton and Burnette). Burney’s obituary follows:

Burney Taylor (MARCH 19, 1945 - OCT. 21, 2022)

Burnette Taylor, Jr. “Burney” passed away at his home with his family in Crystal Springs, MS on October 21. He was born in Jackson, on March 19, 1945 to the late Burnette and Paton Moody Taylor. Burney grew up in Terry, where he was the quarter back of the football team, and a member of Terry Baptist Church, where his parents took him every Sunday. He retired from the state of MS as the Physical Plant Director and later worked for F.E.M.A. Burney loved hunting and fishing from the sandbar of the MS River. He loved animals, big and small, even rattlesnakes, and he lived a full fun life, watching westerns, racing and football. He played hard in his younger days and loved hard in his older days. His constant companions were Ben and Bubba, his Boston terriers.

Burney often talked with his daughter about his connections with God. He adored his grandchildren Grace and Graham who lovingly know him as “Pappy”. Everything he taught them was the Gospel. Burney was a man with lots of wisdom of whom is happier than he ever imagined with Jesus and Joyce.

Burney is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 51 years that was his rock, Joyce Taylor and his sister, Patsy Ann Taylor Jones.

He is survived by his daughter, Christie Taylor Robbins of Petal; his grandchildren, Grace and Graham Robbins; nephew, Jeff Wedge-worth of Braxton, MS; aunt, Nell Eley; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

The funeral service was Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2:30PM at Chancellor Funeral Home in the Byram area. Visitation began at 1:30PM and was followed by the interment at Terry City Cemetery immediately following the service.

Serving the family as pallbearers were James Green, Jaden Wedgeworth, Donnie Robbins, Graham Rob-bins, Greg Herrington and Jeff Wedgeworth.

As usual, there are 2 voting precinct loctions for Terry. Terry-A is located at the R.O.T.C. Building of Terry High School on Cunningham Avenue. Terry-B is located at the Harbor Building of Wynndale Baptist Church on Springridge Road. Here is the sample ballot for November 8.

There will not be a race for the Hinds County School Board in Terry.

Do not forget the date of Tuesday, Nov. 8. And, if you are 65 years or older or will be away from this county on that date, absentee voting is available for you at Circuit Clerk Zack Wallaces offices in Raymond or in Jackson. There is no excuse for not voting! Others have died for this right, and those in the Ukraine are presently fighting as hard as they can to insure that country’s democratic form of government.

The Ella Bess Austin Library on Cunningham Avenue has been busy over the past months. Each Wednesday, a story time is presented for pre-school and for school-age children at 10:00. Everyone is welcome to listen to these stories. An activity sheet and/or craft follows the story each week. The story time continues to be presented each week.

World Photography Day was Aug. 18, and the Austin Library created its own photography set in one of the meeting rooms where pictures with a beach theme could be taken of the children. National Sponge Cake Day was on Aug. 23, and Twinkies were given to the library patrons all day long. On Aug. 25, the movie Clifford, the Big Red Dog was exhibited while refreshments were enjoyed.

A Library Card Sign-Up campaign began during the month of September. Each person who registered for a new card or a renewal received a coupon for a cookie or for ice cream. An online services classes were given on Sept. 12 and Sept. 19, but those who missed this class may request a personal time of instruction. Also on Sept. 12, National White Chocolate Day was celebrated.

School children may come to the Ella Bess Library after school for extra tutoring assistance on homework, reading and writing. Morning tutoring is also available to students at Terry High School.

This Sunday will be the final Sunday of October. The following day will be Halloween, and the following day will be All Saints’ Day and the first day of November. It is hard for most of us to realize that the year of 2022 will soon be ending.

The Epistle reading for Oct. 30 will be Second Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12 (Paul talks about God’s judgment), and the Gospel reading will be Luke 19:1-10 (Zacchaeus meets Jesus). Loved ones who have passed are remembered by us on All Saints’ Day, and some churches have services on the 1st or reserve a time on the weekend services for the remembrance of these loved one. The scriptures for All Saints’ Day are Daniel 7:1-3,15-18 (Daniel dreams of four animals and the meaning of his dream), Psalm 149 (Praise the God of Israel.), Ephesians 1:11-23 (Paul’s Prayer) and Luke 6:20-31 (Love your enemies.)

Please remember to keep Terry Kees and the Taylor/Robbins family in your prayers.

My good friend, Mayor Paul Winfield of Vicksburg, was kind enough to send me the results of last Friday’s Tery High School football game so fast that I am sure the B.C. Football Field had not yet cleared. Terry was the loser of that game. On Thursday, Oct. 27, the cross-country squad will travel to the Clinton/MHSAA District Super Regional competition (starting at 4:30PM.) Also at 5:00, the ninth-grade basketball team will play Pearl High School (Rankin County). On Friday, Oct. 28, Terry High School’s football team will play Meridian High School (Lauderdale County.) The soccer team will travel to Lanier High School in Jackson to play Ridgeland High School (Madison County) at 5:00. On Halloween afternoon at 5:00, Terry High School’s nineth-grade basketball team will play Vicksburg (Warren County). Four basketball teams will be playing on November 1st against Brandon High School (Rankin County), starting at 4:00. The 9th-grade basketball team will compete against Brandon High School on Nov. 3 at 5:00.

These people from Terry or with Terry connections have celebrated birthdays: Oct. 16- Glenn Stapp, Jr.; Oct. 17 - Stephanie Moore Vice; Oct. 18- Alfred Porter and Troy Voth, Jr.; Oct. 19- Louann Burkett Cobb and Kathleen Covington Shipp; Oct. 24- Linda Allgood; Oct. 25- Debby Broome McDonald; Oct. 28- Michelle Keefer and Ricky Tyson; Oct. 30- Susan Renfrow Lynch.

Nancy Hynam reminded us that Oct. 23 would have been the birthday of the late Larry “Bo” Hynum. He passed away during his school days at Terry High School, and he would have been 75 years old on this birthday.

At the Sept. 6 meeting of the Board of Alders of Terry, rate increases for water and sewer were approved. The basic rate for water will increase by $5.00 (from $23.50 to $28.50) and sewer rates will increase $15.20 (from $10 to $25.20). These increases will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
